VisWeek 2008
The DVG had a strong showing at this year's IEEE VisWeek. We had an InfoVis paper led by Tom on Probe-based Vis, two VAST papers led by Dong/Wenwen and Tera on capturing user interactions and cognitive model respectively, two papers in the Knowledge-Assisted Workshop led by Xiaoyu and Dong on ontology-based visualization and definition of knowledge visualization respectively. Lastly, a poster by Alex that won the best poster award in VAST. Congrats everyone!

EuroVis Papers Accepted
Two papers have been accepted by Eurovis 2008. Starting this year, EuroVis papers will also appear in the journal of Computer Graphics Forum. The two papers are Visual Analysis of Urban Change and Investigative Visual Analysis of Global Terrorism Database led by Tom, and Xiaoyu respectively. Co-authors for Tom's paper include Remco, Zach, and Bill; and co-authors for Xiaoyu's paper include Erin Miller and Kathie Smarick of the START Center at University of Maryland, Bill, and Remco.

CG&A Paper Accepted
Our paper on Leigible Urban Model Simplification has been accepted to the journal of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) May/June 2008 issue on Procedural Methods for Urban Modeling. Although it was presented at both SIGGRAPH 06 as a technical sketch and again at Google as a tech talk, it has not been formally published until now.

This paper is lead by Remco with help from Tom, Zach, and Bill from the DVG, and Caroline Ziemkiewicz (UNCC) and Nancy Pollard (CMU).

    - - Mission - -
The Data Visualization Group studies the interactive display and analysis of data. Often we are concerned with real-time visualization of data from any source. Thus our purview is information (and how it can be transformed into knowledge and understanding), scientific or engineering visualization, and closely related problems such as computational steering or multivariate analysis.
